Certaldo is located in the heart of Val D'Elsa, exactly halfway between Florence and Siena. The town has a lower modern part and an upper one, Certaldo Alto, surrounded by walls with 3 entrance doors. The town is known for being the birthplace of the poet Giovanni Boccaccio who was born in the town and who surely died here on the 21st December 1375. Take in mind to climb up to the medieval district with the typical funicular departing from Piazza Boccaccio. One of the most popular events in the village is '' Mercantia '', an original street-style festival, which brings together jugglers, artists and comedians in five evenings during July.
