Certaldo, 6km

Home town of Giovanni Boccaccio

Certaldo is located in the heart of Val D'Elsa, exactly halfway between Florence and Siena. The town has a lower modern part and an upper one, surrounded by walls with 3 entrance doors. The town is known for being the birthplace of the poet Giovanni Boccaccio who was born here and surely died in 1375. Keep in mind to climb up to the medieval district with the typical funicular departing from Piazza Boccaccio. One of the most popular events in town is the so-called ''Mercantia'', an original street-style festival, which brings together jugglers, artists and comedians in five evenings during the month of July of each year.
